Water damage losses are classified three ways:

Category 1
Clean water – relatively safe , generally from a clean source.

Category 2
Grey water – discharges from dishwashers, washing machines, and toilets – can escalate to category 3 with time.

Category 3
Black water – grossly unsanitary and always contains pathogenic agents. Main sources include sewer backflow and flood water containing unknown levels of contaminants from the exterior.

Even a category 1 water loss can produce a dangerous situation with time.
